Mānuka Honey: 5 Natural Tricks

The nutrition and goodness which Mānuka honey provides is no secret, after all, they call it liquid gold for a reason.

The higher the quality of the honey, the bigger the benefit. One of our local favourites PURITI Mānuka honey is one of the top in the world, boasting tonnes of benefits and features in our Winter Honey Elixir which is made with honey, lemon and a dash of cayenne pepper for a kick. It’s perfect for those chilly mornings as we head into the cooler season and especially if you’re feeling a little bit under the weather.

What do we love about Mānuka Honey?

Sweetener
The best thing about Mānuka honey is the fact that it is made up of Glucose and Fructose which means it’s a slow energy burner. For a sweetener, it’s also jammed packed with goodness like trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids. Substitute it into your baking, your smoothies or just on toast for a sweet kick without the guilt.

Medicinal
One of the most sought-after honey varieties out there, Mānuka is highly regarded and sought after in traditional medicine for its nutritional and natural healing properties. There is an actual reason why people suggest having honey and lemon when you are sick. It contains a large amount of immune supporting properties and is a natural cough suppressant.  It’s also good for cuts and Mānuka’s antimicrobial properties are well known and Mānuka medical dressings are now commonly used in advanced wound care for bacteria-related disorders, because of its known natural antibiotic qualities.

For your beauty regime
Another health benefit of Mānuka honey- it’s also full of hydrating and antioxidant properties which help boost the elasticity of your skin and the natural production of collagen (and we’re so here for that). Let’s not forget your hair which will be rid of split ends, just leave it on for 20 minutes and you are good to go. It doesn’t end there; it makes for the perfect lip balm and moisturiser – all things that matter in the harsh winter conditions.

Digestive system
Researchers discovered that consuming Mānuka honey on a regular basis can reduce the symptoms of a digestive disorder. By consuming Mānuka honey, you can prevent abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, and irregular bowel movement. Add a teaspoon into your smoothie, pop it on a slice of toast or enjoy it straight from the jar.

Not just sweet things
Here’s a creative trick to get honey into more of your foods- add it to your dinners, lunches and snacks. It’s super easy to put into a salad dressing or simply add to your roasted vegetables to give them a caramelised taste. A favourite dressing we’re obsessed with at the moment is olive oil, lemon juice, a dash of apple cider and a small spoonful of honey (which is particularly amazing with raw leafy greens like kale and spinach).

There’s not really anything honey can’t do: heal your sore throat, fix your hair, soften your skin and be swapped out for sugar. Honey is a MVP in our eyes and there is nothing quite like Mānuka honey from NZ (We’re pretty proud Kiwis, can you tell!?)

Where can you buy Mānuka honey online in New Zealand?
PURITI sells their range online or try it out in our Winter elixir, available for a limited time at both Auckland stores.
